What is Chinese Medicine?

Chinese medicine is a 2,000 year old medical art that adheres to the principle that health and wellness are found when you live harmoniously with nature. For example – rest and sleep more during the winter months as daylight hours are at at their minimum, or eat foods that are in season. Illness occurs when we step out of the natural flow around us or various pathogenic influences act to impede the natural rhythms of the human system.

The acupuncturist utilizes the insertion of needles and herbal medicines to manipulate the body’s energy or “qi” (pronounced “chee”) to restore synergy with the natural rhythms of nature.

Despite it’s ancient roots, acupuncture has been endorsed by many of the most prestigious modern medical institutions including: The United States National Institutes of Health, the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, the World Health Organization, and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

How does acupuncture work?

From a traditional Eastern perspective, acupuncture exerts its influence by assisting the body to move the flow of qi through the body. Disease occurs when this flow is disrupted from stagnation, deficiency or blockage. By promoting the flow of qi, we are able to restore wellness.

From a Western biomedical approach, much is still unknown about how acupuncture exerts its influence on the body. We know through rigorous scientific study that acupuncture does increase local blood flow where a needle is placed. Increased blood flow aids in tissue healing and decreasing inflammation. Acupuncture also assists the body in the release of natural opioids that aid in pain management. However, acupuncture has been shown to be effective for a wide variety of symptoms and conditions – beyond simply local pain or injury.
