Ozone Therapy

Ozone (O3) gas was discovered in the mid-nineteenth century. It is a molecule consisting of three atoms of oxygen. O3 has many therapeutic effects. Ozone therapy has been utilized and studied for more than a century. Its effects are proven, consistent, and safe and with minimal and preventable side effects. Medical O3 is used to treat a variety of diseases. Ozone’s safety history is virtually unparalleled in modern medicine. In 1980 a study was done by the German Medical Society of Ozone using 384,775 patients, which comprised a total of 5,579,238 ozone treatments administered. There were only 40 cases of side effects noted out of this number, which represents the incredibly low rate of .000007%. That is less chance of a side effect occurring from Ozone than may occur from taking an aspirin.

Ozone treatments have been found to be helpful for treating infections with bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spirochetes. Ozone can be helpful in increasing ATP production (the molecule the body uses for energy), modulating the immune system, and increasing activity of antioxidant systems in the body.

At Portland Natural Medicine, we are using Ozone in a variety of forms to help successfully treat a number of conditions. Dr. Messinger has completed Ozone training under Dr. Frank Shallenberger, MD and Dr. Robert Rowan, MD. The forms that we administer ozone are decided based upon the person and conditions we are treating. The following is a brief description of some of the Ozone delivery methods employed at Portland Natural Medicine.

Major Autohemotherapy (MAH)

MAH is a systemic treatment that involves starting an IV and through the IV withdrawing between through the IV between 2-9 oz. of the patient’s blood and then ozonating the blood and re-infusing that back into the patient. Patients have found it very useful for improving symptoms from Lyme disease and its co-infections, Chronic viral infections, Chronic Fatigue, and low vitality.

Rectal Ozone Insufflation

This involves delivering ozone with a catheter into the rectum which in turn has localized effect in the GI tract and also has systemic effects since the ozone gets absorbed through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. This is a nice compliment to MAH for added systemic effects. Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease have found it to be extremely helpful. Patients often self-administer in the privacy of the bathroom.

Neural Therapy

Developed in Germany, Neural therapy is a very effective healing therapy that involves identifying various interference fields that are disrupting the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). The ANS controls all automatic functioning in our body without us having to think about it. This includes but is not limited to blood pressure, heart rate, all hormone output, and gastrointestinal function. When there is an interference field in the body, any of our regulatory processes can be disturbed and symptoms can result. After we have identified interference fields, we then employ Neural therapy through the injection of Procaine and often Ozone to restore homeostasis. Injection sites can include scars, acupuncture points, trigger points, glands, autonomic nerve ganglia (a cluster of nerve cells), and other tissues. It is very effective for a number of conditions.

Prolozone involves injecting various combinations of procaine and ozone gas into degenerated or injured joints, and into areas of pain. It has been found to be very helpful to stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms in injuries that have not healed, inflamed joints, and degenerative joints.

Vaginal Ozone Insufflation

This is an amazingly effective treatment for any type of vaginal infection. After being instructed, patients will self-insert the catheter and it will remain in place for 15 minutes and deliver high concentrations of ozone. Lower concentrations are used if we need to stimulate tissue healing.

Bladder Ozone Insufflation

This treatment we have found to be extremely helpful for patients who are suffering from interstitial cystitis, or bladder irritation from other unidentified causes. It is not uncommon for patients with Lyme disease and/or Bartonellosis to have persistent bladder symptoms. This is often due to the affinity that Borrelia and Bartonella can have for the urinary tract. We use small doses of ozone which we instill into the bladder after inserting a catheter. Ozone is a direct anti-microbial and this often helps to improve and resolve symptoms.

Sinus Ozone Treatments

We have found that a number of our patients have chronic sinus infections. This is different from the presentation of an acute infection as it often does not cause severe sinus pain or fever. Instead, patients will often have chronic congestion, some mild sinus pressure, fatigue, brain fog, and neck and shoulder pain. With treatment many of these symptoms do improve. We have multiple ways to treat the sinuses with ozone. This includes ozonated herbal nasal spray, Ozone insufflation into the sinuses, Neural therapy injections of procaine and ozone into acupuncture points that correspond to the sinuses, and delivering ozonides through the ear canal.
